A Preliminary Study of Maya Cosmology

In December 2020, I began an apprenticeship with Mayan elder Gina KanBalam Miranda, who is a traditional daykeeper and who has instructed me in contemporary Mayan ritual practices and the tracking of calendrical cycles. Geometric and color studies explore the twenty universal forces that operate at the center of the Tzolkin, a 260-day cycle that operates in relationship to the duration of a human pregnancy, the time it takes to grow corn, and the synodic cycle of Venus. Drafts of Mayan constellations on images of the night sky support Gina’s calendar work.
