Cien Malinches

These drawings represent a selection from a series of erotic drawings depicting the sexual relations between the Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés and la Malinche (also known as Malinal or Doña Marina), the indigenous woman who served as his translator and who mothered his son. Both a historical figure and cultural symbol, la Malinche is considered the prototypical “ethnic traitress” and the mother of all mestizos. As a Latina of mixed ethnicity, I regard la Malinche as a patron saint and a figure through which I can explore my relationship to whiteness and my sexual relationships with white men and women. These drawings allow la Malinche to take as many forms as there are understandings of her story.
